It was dark when Sophie woke again, her head completely clear for the first time in days. Bruce was awake. He faced away from her, sitting in a chair drawn up to the window, though it was night outside. His left hand lay on the arm of the chair. Despite all that had happened, he still wore that gold ring on his finger.

Sophie gazed at him, her eye snagged by the false wedding ring, when he twisted around in the chair.

“Sophie?” he asked, focusing on her. “Are you feeling better?”

“Yes,” she said, smiling to reassure him. “Thanks to you.” She got up, twining the sheet around her body, and crossed the room to him. “How do I look?”

He stood up and gave her a once over with appreciative eyes. He reached out to take one of the strands of her cropped hair in his fingers. “Your hair curls,” he said, absently.

“It’s getting long. I’ll have to cut it again soon to fit well under the wig. You know you’re one of the very few people in the world who’ve seen my real hair.”

“It becomes you.”

Trying to keep a sudden nervousness out of her voice, Sophie said, “You didn’t sleep by me last night.”

“No.” He pulled his hand away.

“There’s not much point in my being recovered if you’re running yourself down. You don’t need to stay up every moment. I’m much better now.”

“It’s not that.”

“What, then?”

“I don’t trust myself around you,” he said. “Especially not now, when you’re yourself all the time.”

Sophie never heard more charming words. She laughed, then leaned in and kissed him. She only stunned Bruce for a moment. Then his arms circled her and held her close to him, and the embrace itself was dizzying in its sweetness.

She twined her arms around his neck, pressing herself closer. Taking a quick breath, she whispered, “So I can still seduce you?”

At her words, he pulled away, even though she could sense his reluctance to do so. “I didn’t think…I’ll stop.”

“Why?”

He looked away. “You’ve made your opinion clear before.”

“That was before,” Sophie said. She did not move away from him. “I’ve…ah, reconsidered.”

He watched her, his breath quick. “Maybe the poison affected your brain.”

“Don’t mock me,” she said. She felt horribly vulnerable. “I’m serious, Bruce. I…I don’t know how to ask you for this.” She curled one hand around his forearm, feeling how tense he was.

“Why not? We both know you’ve done this before.”

Sophie looked down, seeing her own skin and the plain sheet she wore as her only clothing. Was this how she thought to seduce him? She had only one thing that would appeal to Bruce. Her honesty. “Yes, I have. But never just because I wanted to.”

“Oh.” He reached out to touch her chin, making her look at him. “And you do now?”

She nodded, searching his face. “With you. Please? I need to know that…I’m alive.”

Somehow, he understood her true meaning. Without another word, Bruce took hold of the sheet, using the fabric as a way to keep her next to him.
